How to Prepare Your Organization for AI

AI readiness has less to do with models and more to do with workflows, data and governance. A preparation order that gets past the pilot stage.
AI projects usually fail for ordinary reasons. Nobody agreed which problem the project was solving, the data underneath could not be trusted, or governance arrived late and shut it down. Preparation is what separates companies that get AI into production from companies that keep running pilots.
Start with workflows, not models
List the workflows where skilled people spend hours on repetitive judgment: reading documents to pull out the same fields, sorting incoming requests, drafting routine replies. These are the natural first uses for AI because the value can be measured in hours before any code is written.
Make one dataset trustworthy
AI amplifies the quality of whatever it reads. You do not need a complete data platform to start. You need one clean, owned, current dataset for the first use case. Fix ownership and freshness for that slice, ship the use case, and let the platform grow from there.
Bring governance in early
Before launch, decide who reviews AI output, which actions need a person to approve them, and how you will check accuracy over time. Governance designed alongside the build takes days. Governance added after an incident takes months.
Fund a capability, not an experiment
Budget for something that will live in production, with monitoring, support and ongoing changes, rather than for a demo. A small scope that ships is worth more than an ambitious pilot that does not.
