Reducing Azure Costs: A Practical Checklist

The savings hiding in most Azure environments, such as rightsizing, reservations and orphaned resources, and how to keep the bill down afterwards.

Most Azure environments we review contain 20 to 40 percent waste. The causes repeat, which is why a checklist works.

The usual suspects

Oversized virtual machines running at single-digit utilization. Development environments billing around the clock. Orphaned disks and IP addresses that outlived whatever they were attached to. Premium tiers chosen "to be safe" and never revisited. Steady workloads paying on-demand rates for years when a reservation or savings plan would cost far less.

The one-time sweep

Rightsize against actual utilization, schedule non-production shutdowns, delete the orphans, and buy reservations for the steady baseline. This alone usually cuts a mature bill by about a quarter.

Keeping it down

Waste grows back without an owner. Budgets with alerts per team, a monthly cost review with a named person responsible, and tagging that makes every resource attributable turn cost control from a project into a habit.
